Materials that are hard, elastic, rubber-like, sticky, or otherwise difficult to homogenize under ambient conditions can be efficiently processed in the knife mill using cryogenic grinding with dry ice. Cooling the sample with dry ice makes such materials brittle, thereby facilitating rapid and reproducible size reduction while preventing heat-induced deformation or smearing during the grinding process.
For safe cryogenic operation, the RH-1600 and RH-2000 is equipped with a specially designed cryo vent featuring a controlled opening of vent that allows any pressure generated during grinding to be safely released. This design minimizes the risk of pressure buildup while maintaining optimal operating conditions.
When used in combination with a stainless-steel grinding container and a full-SS316L metal knife, the system provides excellent mechanical stability, efficient energy transfer, and superior resistance to low-temperature operating conditions. This configuration ensures effective homogenization of challenging samples such as frozen foods, polymers, rubber products, animal tissues, plant materials, and other temperature-sensitive substances.
The cryogenic grinding setup not only improves sample recovery and reproducibility but also preserves the original composition of heat-sensitive analytes, making it particularly suitable for analytical laboratories requiring accurate and representative sample preparation.
Pulverizing high-fat, high-sugar, or moist items (e.g., chocolate, meat, cheese, marzipan) without altering texture or losing volatile compounds.
Embrittling rubbers and plastics so they can be milled into fine, homogenous powders.
Preparing samples like DNA, tissue, and drugs for analytical testing
